Invasive Brush Mowing September 23-27

The Bolingbrook Park District’s Natural Resources department will be performing invasive brush mowing at several of our naturalized areas from Monday, September 23 until Friday, September 27. The goal of this project is to efficiently remove dense sections of invasive and aggressive shrub and tree species such as honeysuckle, buckthorn, multiflora rose, and boxelder. Care is taken to protect native trees and desirable shrub species during the mowing process. The areas we are targeting have become overgrown and provide very little ecological benefit to birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Other areas will be mowed to keep invasive shrubs from pushing on residence fences and encroaching on their back yards. It is critical for our restoration efforts to remove these dense stands of invasive shrubs so sunlight can reach the soil and allow germination of native plant species. The mowing process turns unwanted shrubs and trees into a layer of mulch that will slowly break down and provide nutrients to the soil. Once the mowing is complete, the next phase of our plan will consist of monitoring the area for growth of new invasive plants and controlling them as needed.
